Planning for 2010 Foals:

When dealing with a particular colour pattern, quality is paramount. Our mares have very good quality temperment, conformation, pedigree and gait. Colour is the icing on the cake.

With there being only about 750 Paso Finos with pinto markings in North America and even fewer being homozygous for the tobiano (pinto pattern) gene, the challenge to produce quality Pinto Paso Finos is even greater.

The tobiano gene is dominant, meaning that if present it will always be expressed. Several labs exist that can genetically test your horse. A homozygous tobiano has two copies of the gene, one from the sire and one from the dam (TT) and hence will always pass one to it's offspring, guaranteeing that it's progeny are pinto. A heterozygous tobiano (Tt) only has one copy of the gene and so only 50% on average of it's offspring will inherit the tobiano gene and be pinto.
Therein lies the challenge for a breeder who wants to produce quality Paso Finos with the pinto markings. Who to breed to whom?

Because exceptional temperament and gait are paramount to us, for 2010 foals  we are breeding only to the solid colour Springtime Radiante, top ten sire in 2001, who is renowned for producing both. We will take the luck of the gene draw for colour knowing that are first two priorities are covered. Check back later to see who is in foal.

Hispanola del Cardo
This year we are setting the genetics for temperament and accurate gait by pairing Hispanola del Cardo with Springtime Radiante,  crossing a grandaughter of Capuchino with a son of Nevado.  Knowing that we have met our top two priorities for breeding the fun will be is seeing what colour this foal comes wrapped in.

Bravada TM

Bravada is being crossed with Springtime Radiante with a slightly different objective. Both horses have excellent temperament and smooth gait as well as complimentary conformation. With gait and temperament set the excitement in this cross will be colour. Since Bravada is homozygous for the Tobiano gene this foal will have a white pattern overlaid on some solid body colour. What that colour will be is the question since the red, black and agouti gene are all in play.
